Information
North of Arco, just beyond Mackay on U.S. 93, towers imposing Mount Borah. At 12,662 feet, it is Idaho's highest snowcapped peak. At the base of the peak is the fault from the 7.3 Richter Scale Borah Peak Earthquake that shook the area on October 28, 1983, damaging Challis and Mackay. The earthquake was the largest to hit the continental U.S. since 1959 and was felt in Salt Lake City, Boise and some areas in Montana and the Dakotas. More than 150 aftershocks continued in the next few weeks in the area.
